The Panama Canal, and will the next pandemic be worse?

Now war is a reality. Not only a trade war. No economist has spoken out, but from what I remember, trade tariffs are a textbook example of what a country can do to increase domestic growth macroeconomically. Real protectionism.

Strategic targets are being attacked in the Middle East. I think about how important it was to control the Panama Canal so that the Nazis in the 1940s could not conquer the Caribbean and America. We will see how it develops with Greenland, which in a way has a similar geopolitical location to the Panama Canal.

We must not be naive. In Sweden, banks and pharmacies are being attacked in cyberspace, which affects our everyday lives. I am working as usual and was reminded of the swine flu. T. Bäckstrøm and O-A Olsen were my bosses. Wash your hands! Which still applies even though I sometimes wear nail polish. The article from Boots Pharmacy Kråkerøy, Fredrikstad Blad (Norway) is still online: Swineflu short nails and wash your hands!

It is with some concern that I wonder why Magnus Gisslén was not allowed to remain as state epidemiologist. We are the only country in the Nordic region where authorities with a medical mission are led without medical expertise. Why cannot the highest medical expertise be allowed to govern? Without expertise, the ability to assess signals, prioritize correctly, and, above all, understand the consequences disappears.

It is similar to the first snow in November in Sweden. Even though it happens every year, it’s always the same chaos with slippery accidents, canceled public transport, etc. What if the next pandemic is also likely to be worse?

I want to be involved and influence the day for the better. Time is passing. I heard such nice words about time in passing. Time that can be described with the laws of physics. Humanism has also tried to capture time. Me too, in my book “Time for Freedom”. Here is a variation of “seize the day” by an unknown author:

You have no yesterdays.

Time took them away.

But you have today.

From monoaminergic synthesis to DNA (Generations)

I have always been fascinated by simplicity. First, I had to learn to write intricately and in an educational, complex way, which takes many years. Thereafter, I have worked on simplifying my writing. I have also focused more on prioritizing what is really important.

During my years at the Department of Pharmacology in Göteborg, monoaminergic transmission was/is central. Catechol synthesis from dietary tyrosine to the pharmacologically active catecholamines, such as dopamine, sat in my spinal cord. Dopamine, which controls much of our behavior, is related to noradrenaline and adrenaline, which, among other things, regulate more understandable body functions such as pulse and blood pressure.

I have made a small schematic sketch of this synthesis in the picture below. To never forget the order, I always thought of DNA, which corresponds to dopamine, noradrenaline, and finally adrenaline. I also knew the enzymes that catalyzed this, but here I do not focus so much on them. My creative time in France this year made me remember how to draw structural formulas where the benzene ring is included. Today, computers handle this in advanced 3D models. Development is moving forward.

Monoaminergic synthesis.

Reserpine is included in my sketch, and I want to quote an original finding from Nature 1957 with Carlsson A et al. Nature1957 Nov 30;180(4596):1200), please see https://www.nature.com/articles/1801200a0

In this publication, rabbits were given reserpine, which is obtained from the reserpine plant in India. As you can see in the picture below, the rabbits are apathetic and cannot do much more than rest. The same thing happens with humans. The important question was to answer whether this effect was linked to catecholamines (monoamines) and/or serotonin. When the rabbits were given L-DOPA, the same rabbits became alert again, as you clearly can see. This shaped the basis of the treatment for Parkinson’s disease that is still used today.

This image setting really impressed me. Maybe partly because I was used to growing up seeing the shot winter hare on the steps in the cold, hanging with spruce branches in its belly. I still remember when I found a small bullet in the food I was eating that I immediately spat out.

The effect of L-DOPA in reserpin treated rabbits.

My sketch above summarizes my thoughts, and perhaps you understand how I carried the monoaminergic synthesis in my memory and how it has inspired, via DNA, my book ´Generations´. Or?

Rounding off by sharing some French music. I need to explain this and a little more before I can fully start writing Molly’s book. Her book will be completely in the humanities after AI inspiration/insight.

Medicine balls 💊

So many difficult things are happening in the world right now. In these times, it is nice to go into my little training bubble. Sit-ups with imaginary medicine balls and leaders who say: “add more weights – if you fail, you just take it off”. And good music to go with it!

TGIF strength training.

The Revolutionary Guard headquarters in Tehran was destroyed in Iran. Martyrdom is sacred in the Middle East. The large crowd leads. A mindset that I will never really understand, but which is very important in this context. I remember Lebanon to get a perspective. An Iranian ship was sunk by the American Marines very close to my friend´s Sri Lanka 🇱🇰.

No democratic opposition has been able to take over naturally. Iran now lives in a polarized society with different wills. Interestingly, France, the UK, and Germany immediately showed that they support the USA. This is on a level that we ordinary people do not know, but the military intelligence service is one step ahead without us knowing. Similar to when a lot of countries knew that Ukraine would be attacked by Russia long in advance. What Sweden’s intelligence service does is secret.

My other little bubble is my thought bubble. I am currently writing about how monoaminergic transmission inspired me to write my book, ´Generations´. The theme of ´Generations´was the opposite of war, much like this song to my American 🇺🇸  family who fancy Paris. Also, Dogma-Denmark 🇩🇰 inspired, I think. I am learning Spanish right now, similar to this, with Duolingo 🇪🇸.
