Save-day-light-time

Tomorrow is wintertime. I am currently in the countryside maybe seeing the last part of autumn. It was a little strange this years since there were no apples. I went running today and of course I went for a walk with my little sweetie. Since it is soon Halloween we put a candle on my mothers tomb. My father has searched for letters he wrote to my mother when they met. She lived in Gothenburg at that time, and he was in the military and did a military refresher training (repmånad). It was different then, fifty years ago. He also found this photo of my mother when she went on vacation to Portugal, before I was even thought of.

I will not participate in any more running course this year. But of course, I will continue doing exercise. And I have to, since my sweetie pushes me. Next weekend is Halloween. Perhaps there will be trick-or-treaters knocking my door. I’d better have candy at home.

Antibiotic resistance

This morning I went to a lecture held by Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. It was on actions how to prevent further development of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics are medicines used to prevent and treat bacterial infections. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria change in response to the use of these medicines. Bacteria, not humans or animals, become antibiotic-resistant. The antibiotics become less effective.

Most bacterias are classified into two different groups – Gram-positive (purple) or Gram-negative (pinkish or red) – depending on a specific stain color which can be seen in a microscope. The Gram stain test was developed in the 1800s by the Danish bacterologist Hans Christian Gram.

The image on the left shows Gram-positive bacteria. The image on the right is Gram-negative bacteria (Credit Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Gram-negative bacteria

Examples of Gram-negative bacteria that have demonstrated drug resistance include:

  • E. coli, which causes the majority of urinary tract infections
  • Acinetobacter baumanii, which causes disease mainly in healthcare settings. In addition, wound infections caused by Acinetobacter have been found in U.S. military personnel who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which causes bloodstream infections and pneumonia in hospitalized patients. It is a common cause of pneumonia in patients with cystic fibrosis.
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae, which causes many types of healthcare-associated infections, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and bloodstream infections
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea

This means that people may die, even though there is antibiotics available. Therefore, antibiotics should be used with caution. It should also be noted that people die due to no access at all to antibiotics. It is indeed a complex subject. The work against development of antibiotic resistance is also at a political level. Governmental action is taken, and bilateral collaborations are supported among various countries. The UN is also involved.

The WHO has many suggestions how to work on prevention. What can we do?

  •  Prevent infections by regularly washing hands
  •  Prepare food hygienically following WHO:

              1) keep clean

              2) separate raw and cooked

              3) cook thoroughly

              4) keep food at safe temperatures

              5) use safe water and raw materials

  •  Choose food produced without the use of antibiotics for growth promotion
  •  Never share or use leftover antibiotics
  •  Always follow your health worker’s advice when using antibiotics

Certainly, there are more advice how to prevent infections, maybe you can help me.

E pur si muove!

It is Friday and I have been on a lecture today. I try to learn new subjects, and it is very interesting. Then I can write more here. A day off also means exercise. Now I don’t run that much anymore since it is autumn. I was lucky last Sunday since it was so sunny. Usually it is so cold so I was well dressed. I feel rather happy because I will be able to run with a Cocker Spaniel. And of course, continue to walk with sweetie. I will have a sweetie and a cutie. To summarise, I have had a take care of myself day. Needed sometimes.

Sharing some Friday music. I hope you like, and maybe you remember this classic song with Modern talking.

Brexit – future political history

Right now political history is written in the UK. I am talking about Brexit. It is very interesting to follow the political development with regard to many aspects. A lot of people would like to have another vote since they believe that voters would change their mind. But considering democracy, I agree with news I saw (see headline above). An election is an election, and that is democracy. Most people are afraid of change, and do not see possibilities. The outturn of Brexit will depend on eg how successful negotiations are with the EU. The UK is unique since London is connected with the whole world more or less. People from all continents live and work there, and it definitely is a busy world city. Foreign relations are important, and I believe that there has been a development compared to a century ago. Infrastructure, industrial development, technical aspects of communications have completely changed. Compared to hundred years ago, we are on another platform. It is like a new dimension has been added to human life.

New dog

It is not easy to find a new dog. That takes time. I remember when I found my sweetie. It took months to find her. That was in wintertime. She was born on New years eve. And she has really been a family member, and still is. So, I will see if I can find new cutie who will keep her company.
